Chapter Twenty-One

Kassia

Everyone’s eyes were on me and all I wanted was an answer. I was getting ticked off. Mira stepped forward. “We got it. Vala gave Noe the antidote. Now we’re waiting.”

I breathed a sigh of relief and looked down at my chest. My shirt was covered in blood, but the wound was gone. I remembered getting hit with an arrow and lying in Nik’s lap. I looked over at him and he gave me a half smile. “There was an arrow.”

“Did you see who shot the arrow, Kassia?” Ramsey asked, stroking his beard.

“No. One whizzed by my head and the next one got me in the chest,” I remembered. “I didn’t see where they came from.”

“Can demons shoot arrows?” Chase asked.

“Never seen one use a weapon before,” Ramsey answered.

“Could it have been their leaders?”

“Not the leaders themselves. Too mundane. This is something they’d send others to do,” Ramsey clarified.

“Others? Like who?” Chase probed further.

“Humans on their side.”

“Why would any human willingly be on their side?” Briana asked.

“Power hungry.” I remembered Kern. “So someone shot me with an arrow and Briana healed me.”

“For the most part.” Briana’s lips curved up.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“The arrow had demon blood on it. Your angel blood kept you from what is happening to Noe right now,” Vala added.

“But Noe didn’t get demon blood in her. She only got bitten,” Auralee said, confused.

“The demon snake is venomous.”

“So it’s unlike the other demons we’re familiar with?”

“Yes,” Vala said. “Think of the other demons like animals—dogs, cats, that kind of thing. The demon snake is like a rattlesnake. Only takes one bite.”

“Did we get to her in time?”

Vala nodded. “She’s healing.”

“Although the demon blood couldn’t kill me, the arrow could’ve, right?” I asked.

“Yes,” Vala answered. “If Briana hadn’t healed you when she did, you wouldn’t have made it.”

My heart flip-flopped hearing those words. I glanced over at Briana. “You came through again.”

“Anytime.”

I ran my fingers over the jagged scar on my leg that I had received from demons last year. “Hey, Briana?”

“Yeah?”

“Can you heal scars?”

Briana glanced at the scar on my leg and shook her head. “No. There are some things I can’t heal.”

“What about you, Vala? Is there anything you can do to make them go away?” I hated the scars. They were ugly and reminded me of things I’d rather not remember.

“No, angel child. Those scars are there for good. Wear them proudly. They are left to remind you what you’ve been through, the battles you’ve gone through and won.”

As always, Vala made me think differently about something. I looked back at the scar and started thinking of ways I could make it stand out. I laughed to myself. Mira would just love if I covered it with glitter.

It took another hour until Noe started to stir. She blinked a few times before looking at Auralee. A slow smile spread across her face and she said, “Told you I’d be okay.”

“I don’t know whether to kiss you or smack you,” Auralee said through her teeth.

“The first one.
